DESCRIPTION:

There is a story behind this song, as there's a story behind any song.

We play instrumental music since our birth, late in more than 15 years ago now, and we usually rehears a lot in order to make a track the way we wish, trying each time to improve it more and more, up to the point it's time to record it, mix it and publish it on an album.
But we improvise a lot when we invent new tracks. We usually don't sing, anyway.

This does not mean that we never had voices in our previous records, but in most cases we borrowed the microphone to someone else, as guests. And even when we have been brave enough to record our voices, it was for covers (of Jackson C. Frank and The Clash), never daring to write our own lyrics.

"At the Gate" is our very first 'real' song, although it wasn't born as such, especially because, apart from the basic beats made with Matteo's laptop, all the other instruments (Franz's violin and keyboards, Alberto's guitar and Cris' bass) have been fully improvised in only two attempts at the end of a recording session at Argolab Studios in Varese, by our friend and collaborator Gianmaria Aprile.

The recorded impro happened in a warm 29th of July 2018, then in 2019 Matteo wrote the lyrics during a job trip, and sent them to Alberto, who finally dared to sit down in his home studio and record his shy voice on the track.

So this is a sort of very spontaneous piece of music, where the lyrics and vocals have been added one year afterwards.

What you hear now is the result of this long process, and - funnily enough - when we decided to put it out in May 2020, during the worldwide lockdown due to the outbreak, we didn't realised how much the lyrics of this song, written long before this mind-changing happening, fit with the actual situation.

The single 'B side', a sort of instrumental and beatless version of the single, was mixed a few days ago in April, and includes a couple of field recordings done here in Milan before and after the lockdown.
