Tex La Homa & Sparkle
in Grey: Whale Heart, Whale Heart
REVIEWS
![]() Sparkle In Grey (Matteo Uggeri, Alberto Carozzi, Franz Krostopovic and Cristiano Lupo) open their half of this split 12-inch vinyl with a rather stirring piece – “These Nightmares Are Ending” – that makes great use of unusual field recordings whose nature is at once grainy and evocative, opening towards vaster lands as the frames succeed. Acoustic guitar, violin and (apparently) electric piano caress the listener’s spirit through an excellent minimalist episode of “cinema pour l’oreille” worthy of recurring visits. The subsequent “L’innocence Du Sommeil”, featuring Andrea Ferraris, is opened by German toddlers amiably chatting upon a vacillating suspension of strings and plucked melodies which may have a couple of points in common with Richard Skelton and Stars Of The Lid, yet is struck by completely different beams. A sense of melancholic estrangement defining another appealing scenario. Britain’s Matt Shaw (Tex La Homa) responds with four linked tracks that share very little with SIG, starting with a “cheap tape” audio quality revealing a limited world of inadequate homespun intuitions. “Becoming” is the marriage of pseudo-romantic keyboards and a disturbing screaming voice which, heavily filtered, sounds like that of a seriously sick individual. We then shift to “Dorchester Sunrise”: poor on a compositional level and almost new age-ish, replete as it is with tiresomely consonant, repetitive synth washes. “To Home” – if this writer gets the right picture – features children at play together with the main character, with easily imaginable results. “Born On A Friday” is built on simplistic strumming shortly interrupted by music boxes and “enriched” by unremarkable vocals. If there’s irony in all this, it escaped yours truly. This is the perfect illustration of what the “everyone’s a musician” epidemic generates nowadays. http://touchingextremes.wordpress.com/ Giovanni Linke, Il Mucchio Nel 2008 avevamo lasciato gli Sparkle In Grey in "un posto tranquillo" dicendone ogni bene, sapendoli in viaggio verso il “México”, nuovo album che auguriamo veda presto la luce. Frédérick Galbrun, Foxy Digitalis It’s hard to describe how soothing this record is. It’s the kind of album you want to put on continuously just to escape life’s erratic pace and start focusing on what really matters. In this case, it may be the birth of a child. I’m getting to that age where having a child sounds like the reasonable thing to do and the next step to a commitment with life. Maybe that’s why this record appeals so much to me. “Whale Heart” is a collaboration between Italian quartet Sparkle in Grey and Matthew Shaw of Tex La Homa from the U.K. The first outfit is known for a more post-rock approach as on their other great record “A Quiet Place” released in 2008. Matteo Uggeri, the man behind Spakle in Grey, is also a prominent artist in the Italian drone scene at par with other names like Maurizio Bianchi. He’s featured in the really informative book by Phillipe Blache titled “Italian Industrioal Drone Music: The Art of Duration and Resonance.” The latter qualifies more as an experimental/folk artist. His solo work is available on Bandcamp, and definitely interesting. They both share a common sensibility and an ear for experimentation. This collaborative release can easily fit in that music branch called folktronica, and I’m not hesitating branding it that way. Violin and guitar are the instruments primarily used for this record, layered with sparse samples of children crying and babbling. I’m not usually responsive to this manoeuvre trying to summon some fatherly sensitivity. In fact, I usually hate it. But not here, the samples are used in a creative way and some of these cries are treated in a way that they sound like outer space wailing. In the same way that one can address the iconography of Sparkle in Grey. Both of the artwork I saw depicted childlike/naive drawings, but it has nothing to do with the music. I found the music on this record simple and efficient, but certainly not childish or naive. Favorite “Dorchester Sunrise” showcase beautiful drones and is totally immersive, like most of the record. Simply beautiful. Jerome Olivier, Autres Directions "Methought I heard a voice cry, ’Sleep no more ! Macbeth does murder sleep !’ the innocent sleep, Sleep that knits up the ravelled sleave of care, The death of each day’s life, sore labor’s bath, Balm of hurt minds, great nature’s second course, Chief nourisher in life’s feast." Folk ? Electronique ? Greg Norde, The Silent Ballet When little sonic material is presented, little emotional attachment is created. This is why it is critical for ambient artists to toy with tradition, creating intrigue and interest. Disrupted rhythms, highly processed found sound, and to some extent, reverb and echo add subtle elements that help sparse recordings to stand. Unfortunately, the apparent 'ease' of making an ambient record ('I could do that!') has flooded the market with an smattering of sub-rate recordings that use nothing more than echo on a voice and a default patch from Reason. Sparkle In Grey is responsible for the album's first half. Opener, "These Nightmares Are Ending" has a remarkable breadth of instrumentation, yet a stunning openness of sound. Despite the presence of at least 12 different instruments/recordings/synths, the song never seems to break a sweat. The constant, calculated jabs of found sound and scratchy samples perfectly accent the lilting violin and often confused, but lovely walking guitar lines. This song lives out its nine minute lifespan with purpose and resolve. The minimal soundscape offers enough substance to warrant multiple listens: multiple attempts that are necessary to understand its depth of sound. In contrast to this stunning track, "L'innocence Du Sommeil" begins rather plainly. A child's voice is heard as a violin cries out a somber, haunting melody. Small speckles of noise disrupt the proceedings, but the track does not flower until the violin is lost to reverb. At this point, the droning guitar creates a smooth background for synthetic sounds to bubble up and push the song into the realm of intrigue. Slow sonic evolution and additional instrumentation provide a welcome injection of stimulation. New textures are brought to the table, while clichés are left behind. The sound becomes increasingly sparse, leaving behind the memories of what came before. An emptiness is felt after the disappearance of such beauty. The style of Tex La Homa is much more confrontational. Audio distortions and forceful counterpoints provide sonic perplexity. The ambient standby - the pad - appears in full force on "Dorchester Sunrise". Mid-tone, spacey drones, slowly undulating between thirds, make for a sound that is all-too-familiar and uninteresting, despite the increased textures of the later minutes. Thankfully, "To Home" and "Born On A Friday" are exquisite finishers that utilize disjointed rhythms and uncommon tones. While sparse, these tracks maintain a constant feeling of experimentation and offer something out of the ordinary. These closing tracks succeed because they explore the possibilities of audio within a minimal landscape - the very thing that gives ambient music its power. Despite some familiar moments, Whale Heart, Whale Heart boasts some stupendous song writing that takes the task of audio deconstruction to heart. New and intriguing sounds are produced using minimal tools. This album is a great take on the minimal by two like-minded, but very different musical acts.
Frans de Waard, Vital Weekly Matteo Uggeri started Sparkle In Grey as a solo electronic project in 1999, but over the years expanded into a four piece band, using anything from laptop to guitar, bass, drums, bagpipes, violin and keyboards. One could perhaps say a kind of post rock band. They share a record with Tex La Homa, the brainchild of Matthew Shaw, who also runs the Apollolaan label. Sparkle In Grey have two lengthy pieces here, which make a fine combination between that sorrowful tune played on the violin, the scraping and tinkling of sweet guitar sounds, the gentle crash on cymbal, along with time stretched field recordings. Mellow music by and for mellow people, I'd say. Very enjoyable. Which is something that can also be said of the four shorter pieces by Tex La Homa, which aren't particular cut for any genre. A bit of ambience, a bit of drones (organs float about in 'Dorchester Sunrise'), gentle percussion in 'To Home' and a psychedelic pop song outing in 'Born On A Friday'. Four varied pieces of
music that flow nicely into eachother. Nice one. Complimenti. Vittore Baroni, Rumore (sotto)
[...] a nostalgic and shared afflatus that contemplates the life and death cycle. [...] Two mirrored sides of the same big mistery.
Sparkle in Grey’s experimental background meets head on with British solo-project Matt Shaw, aka Tex La Homa, whose music has recently been defined as “inherently changeable, constantly mutating and evolving”. There’s no doubt that the word ‘eclectic’ is one that fits perfectly with the musicians featured on Whale Heart, Whale Heart, and feels rather similar to Kranky-style experimentation, and at other times moves into experimental alt folk singer-songwriter compositions with delicate vocals and field recordings (Tex La Homa) that move effortlessly into post-industrial, acoustic, ambient, and even ethnic music in the case of Sparkle in Grey. The result of their collaboration is a slow and melancholic record, where violin and acoustic guitar meet soft field-recordings and granulized noises on one side, and on the other bright drones surrounded by delicate noises wind up in an unexpected folk hymn. Oh My God Vinyl! Here’s another great experimental record, we love hearing abstract explorations into tones like this. Sparkle in Grey are from Italy, Tex La Homa are from the UK, both create ambitious passages that weave through your neurons. The LP is 180 gram and costs €22 outside of the EU. L'incontro fra gli italiani Sparkle in Grey (all'attivo già l'ottimo “A Quiet Place”) e il cantatuore Max Shaw in arte Tex La Homa (l'ultimo album è l'essenziale “Little Flashes Of Sunlight On A Cold Dark Sea”), è inusuale quanto genuino e vitale.
Pall Youhideme, Komakino Of august lineage, 180gr vinyl split of dramatic ambient Music for Sparkle in Grey and Tex La Homa, respectively from Italy and UK, two tracks for the first, four for the latter one-man Band. .·´¯¯`·. .·´¯¯`·. Eskaton, Chain D.L.K. I have previously reviewed Sparkle in Grey's 'A Quiet Place,' so I had some idea what I was in for. That said, Tex La Homa certainly brought in an element of chance. I had never heard of this artist, who is one Matthew Shaw. The album is split between the two projects.
